Sydney Newbie is headed by Dean McLachlan, an award-winning PR practitioner, journalist, sports commentator and MC.

Dean started his working career in sports journalism in 1985 as a foundation member of Independent Radio Sport in Wellington, moving north to set up the Auckland office and write for Rugby News and NZ Cricket two years later.

He moved into PR and communications in 1991 with New Zealand’s leading corporate consultancy, Network Communications, while juggling ground announcing duties at Eden Park for all rugby with part-time work on Sky TV as a presenter for NRL matches. Dean joined the Auckland Warriors as Communications Manager in 1995, the club’s first year in the NRL, before broadening his skill set as Marketing Manager at Netball New Zealand between 1997 and 2001. He also served on the board of New Zealand Tennis in the early Noughties.

For the past 10 years he has operated his own company, Surge, in the PR, events and sports marketing fields…in more recent times directing PR and media relations for the NZ Breakers, A1GP Taupo and the New Zealand A1GP team while providing commentating services for TVNZ’s netball coverage, including the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

He has shifted to Sydney due to a work transfer for his uber-talented wife and is now attached to a gun boutique PR Consultancy while striving to polish off a novel and a stage show.
