Emergency Services

WHO YOU GONNA CALL? Don’t get messed up by ringing the emergency number you used in your previous country of residence – Triple Zero is the way to go in Oz.

The phone number for all emergencies – police, ambulance and fire – is 000, commonly referred to as Triple Zero. For non-urgent matters, ring 131 444 or your local police station (their numbers are listed under ‘Police stations’ in the White Pages telephone directory).

  • Phone directory assistance: 1223 (all Australian numbers) & 1225 (International)
  • Phone international dial out: 0011 (then your country code & so on)
  • Interstate calling: Dial the area code and then the number
  • 13 or 1300 calls: charged at local call rates
  • 1800 calls: are free from landlines
  • Public phones: 40-cent local calls (Sydney metropolitan area)

Helpful emergency numbers are listed at the front of the White Pages, including the Poisons Information Centre (a 24 hour hotline) on 13 1126.
